riverrushes

Revelation 22:1
And He showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

I was listening to a song entitled Lowest Place by Laura Hackett.   These particular lyrics stood out to me, “Your river, it rushes to the lowest place.”  I know she was referring to His life-giving Spirit.  The river of love, blessing, and power that He pours out over us.

Those lyrics are true and key!   To truly be in a position to receive from the Lord, we have to humble ourselves.

Psalm 25:9
The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way.

Proverbs 11:2
When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.

Matthew 23:12
And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Have you ever watched a river?  It does rush to the lowest place!   Sometimes there is a lot of force behind the river and sometimes it is a slower pace, but no matter what it will be will heading DOWN.

I don’t know about you, but I need to be at the receiving end!  I want all that God has for me!  Don’t you?

What are some ways we can humble ourselves?

Fasting:

Ezra 8:21
Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions.

Psalm 35:13
But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart.

I think another way to humble ourselves is to lift our hands to the Lord:

That is a surrendered gesture in my opinion.  With our arms raised in the air, we aren’t guarding our hearts physically.  We are wide open to receive from our Lord.

1 Timothy 2:8
I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; ESV

Psalm 14:1-2
Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice! ESV

Job 11:13
If you prepare your heart, you will stretch out your hands toward him.  ESV

Psalm 134:2
Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord!  ESV

Yes, the river – it rushes to those who aren’t proud.  It rushes to those who humble themselves.  The river IT RUSHES …
