3am

I just read a blog post belonging to a sweet young woman who is related to me by marriage.  She made the comment of how often she sees 3am and can’t sleep during that time.

I responded, “Oh, don’t you know that is when God often speaks to us?”

I bet I could take a poll and see that many of you could say that you are awakened at 3am.

Isaiah 26:9
With my soul I have desired You in the night,
Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early;
For when Your judgments are in the earth,
The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

Why 3am?   I’m not sure, but it has happened most of my adult life.

A few mornings ago I heard what sounded like our doorbell at 3:30am.  Dingggggg Donggggggg.  It was loud and seemed to stretch out.  Of course it alarmed me and I sat there motionless on my bed waiting to hear it ring again or hear an unusual sound.  Naturally, it is alarming to hear a doorbell at 3:30am!   No other bell rang … thankfully, but as I started contemplating that it was actually the Lord who awakened me, I began to hear, “Pray for Israel.”  Ah, so it was Daddy God awakening me!  I guess I overslept and He knew what it would take to shake me out of my deep slumber!

Psalm 5:1-3
Give ear to my words, O Lord,
Consider my meditation.
Give heed to the voice of my cry,
My King and my God,
For to You I will pray.
My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;
In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up.

There is something about the early morning hours.   It is the beginning of a new day, before the sun has time to awaken us.   It is a time when the world around us is asleep (well, except for other Christians).   There are no distractions and nothing else that we must do at 3am.  It actually makes perfect sense why the Lord would choose such a time.

Mark 1:35
Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.

God desires time with us and I am guilty of allowing so many things to distract me.  Perhaps that is why 3am is the perfect time to catch me.

Did you seek Him this morning?

The lyrics to Step by Step are ringing in my ears:

God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You

I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
