I have enjoyed watching The Bible series by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.  I have heard a few complaints from some Christians because it isn’t strictly scriptural, but in my opinion — the movie has God’s blessing all over it.

Joni Lamb, one of the owner’s of the DayStar Television Network, interviewed the creators of this series.  Roma said she began praying about this project four years ago!  She and her husband are prayer warriors and are committed believers.   Mark wanted to give the younger generation (kids who enjoy movies like The Hobbit) some action and characters that would hold their attention.

I say, “Well done!”

Each episode has spurred me to sit with my Bible open, following along with the story line.   Isn’t it a good thing to have people searching through God’s Word and discussing the Bible?

I must confess, I am NOT looking forward to this week’s episode of Jesus being crucified.  I wept last week, just watching it all begin.

I love Jesus so much.  I am so sorry He had to endure all of that for me, for you, for us all.   I know it had to be that way …

Broken.   My beautiful Savior was broken for my sin.  He endured horrible ridicule as his skin and nerves were bruised and torn.   An innocent, loving man who came to set us free.

Today is called Good Friday.  It is the day that Jesus was crucified.  The day that must have seemed like all hope was lost for his followers.

I wanted to know WHY we call it Good Friday, when it wasn’t a happy day at all.   I did a search and this is what I found:

Good Friday is the day commemorating Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross, which is probably to be dated April 3, A.D. 33. In the liturgical calendar of the Western church, it is the Friday before Easter. The exact origins of the name are uncertain; some argue it stems from the use of “Good” as an adjective applied to the day, which is an Old English synonym for “holy.” Others argue it is a corruption of the word “God,” in the same way that “Good Bye” comes from the phrase “God be with ye.”

Christians believe the day is “good” because the message of Easter is of Christ’s victory over sin, death, and the devil; as the Apostle Paul wrote: “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.” It is believed that, in Jesus’ death on the Cross, He took once and for all the sins of all mankind upon Himself, in our place. This gift He extends to everyone who will believe in Him. Believing in the Good News of the Gospel is our hope. Jesus, the Son of God, who died for our sins, was raised again for our justification, we who believe being made in right stead with God.

However, the term “Good Friday” is only used by Western Christians, and not by Eastern Orthodox Christians. The Orthodox refer to this sacred day as “Great and Holy Friday.”   Click HERE for the link.

Have you ever read what happened the moment Jesus was crucified?

Luke 23:44-47
It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”When he had said this, he breathed his last.

The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”

1.  Darkness covered the land from noon until 3pm.  Can you imagine the sun not shining?

2.  The temple veil, the heavy curtain that covered the entrance to the Holy of Holies was torn in two!  That alone should have put great terror in the hearts of the priests.

Matthew 27:50-54
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

4.  The bodies of holy dead people were brought back to life and they walked into the city!

I would say these signs should have been enough to convince the wicked spiritual leaders, but they didn’t repent.  The centurions even understood the truth.

On that day 2000 years ago, the devil thought he had won.
